At Odyssey Pets, we understand that making the right decisions about your pet's food can be overwhelming. To help make things easier, we’re sharing two incredibly useful tools from pet food expert Susan Thixton that are available to everyone. These calculators will help you evaluate the cost and nutritional content of your pet’s food with ease.
Below, you’ll find links to both calculators along with instructions on how to use them.

Figuring out the actual cost to feed your pet can be tricky—pet food packaging often doesn’t provide the precise measurements needed to make accurate calculations. For example, pet food manufacturers typically don’t list how many cups are in each container, and a cup of pet food doesn’t always weigh the same amount.
To simplify the process, Susan Thixton’s Cost to Feed Calculator breaks down the math for you. By entering just a few key details (such as kcal/kg, kcal/cup, the size of the food, and cost), this tool will calculate the true cost per cup of pet food. You’ll also be able to estimate how much it will cost to feed your pet daily based on the recommended feeding amounts.
What you’ll need:
kcal/kg and kcal/cup (typically found on the pet food container or website)
The size/weight of the pet food
The cost of the pet food
The result? You’ll have a better understanding of how much you’re actually spending to feed your pet.

Carbohydrates are an important part of your pet's diet, but they can be tricky to calculate. Using Susan Thixton’s Calculate Those Carbs tool, you can estimate the carbohydrate content of your pet's food based on the information in the Guaranteed Analysis section of the food label.
To use the tool, just input these five pieces of information from the label:
Crude Protein percent
Crude Fat percent
Crude Fiber percent
Moisture content
Ash content
The tool will then calculate the estimated carbohydrate percentage, allowing you to make better-informed decisions about your pet's food and nutritional needs.
These tools, created by Susan Thixton, are available to everyone and provide quick, easy ways to better understand the cost and nutritional value of the pet food you’re feeding your pet. Whether you’re looking to manage your budget or ensure your pet is eating a balanced diet, these calculators are a great resource.
