In some cases, however, even with your best efforts, diseases find their way into an fish tank. Below are some common aquarium fish diseases and the signs that your fish may be struggling with them:
Ich, short for Ichthyophthirius multifiliis, is the most common aquarium parasite. Signs of ich (pronounced "ick") are: elevated white spots, rapid breathing, rubbing against accessories, or darting about the tank. There are medications and other treatments available for ich.
Other parasites include chilodonella, with symptoms similar to ich, and oodinium, also known as rust, gold, or velvet dust disease, which causes an oddly tinted dusting on the fish's body. There are also fish lice, anchor worms, flukes, and nematodes. Various signs and symptoms include erratic swimming, loss of color, excessive mucous, trouble breathing, and bloating or wasting.
After parasites, one of the most common illnesses are bacterial infections, such as fin and tail rot. Symptoms of the bacterial disease are white film, cloudy eyes, ragged fins, and open sores. Bacterial infections are challenging to treat because antibiotics can interfere with the aquarium and filter.
Fungal infections are much less regular and usually take the form of cotton-like growths.
Viral infections occur in goldfish and koi but are less common in other aquarium fish.
If you see or suspect any of these issues in your fish, it's a good idea to talk with an professional about diagnosis and treatment. Pictures and videos can be helpful in conveying the symptoms you're seeing.

Love the natural healthy food they sell for my dog!!!! Staff are friendly and helpful.
Not a lot of merchandise, but a great store with specialty niche items. I drove from Plano to get a supplement they carry that other stores don't, so I will be coming back!!
I was a long-time customer of Odyssey pets, for their products, for their grooming and for their boarding. They could not have been more accommodating with my four little rescues. I decided to move to another state and wish I could find a place that was as great to work with. I highly recommend them for the knowledge-base of their staff and owners!
This place has excellent service with a kind and knowledgeable staff. I was able to find great deals on fish tanks that were actually BETTER than prices online (including Amazon). The store is very clean and welcoming and their aquarium displays are simply charming. I greatly appreciate the fact that they still require masks amidst the pandemic. That to me means they take the safety of their employees, customers, AND their animals seriously.
My only (minor) complaint is that the store specializes primarily on dogs and aquatic animals. Don’t get me wrong; those are two things I’m VERY passionate about, so I always find what I need. But if you’re looking for a specific product for an animal like a large bird or reptile, such as feeder insects, you’ll have to shop for that elsewhere or at least call in advance to see if they have a certain product of that nature available.
Nonetheless, I LOVED it here. They have a wonderful selection of quality products and their fish and other aquatic animals are so beautiful and healthy. Plus they frequently host events for pet owners, which is always fun! I’d give this shop a 10 out of 5 if I could. I look forward to seeing y’all at Aquashella!
