New Year, New Bowl?
The New Year is a time for fresh starts — and that includes what’s in your pet’s bowl! Just like we set goals to eat better and feel better, our pets can benefit from a diet upgrade too.
Whether you're thinking about switching to cleaner kibble, adding raw or gently cooked food, or just getting rid of low-quality ingredients, now’s the perfect time to do it — and Odyssey Pets is here to guide you.
Why Transition at All?
Upgrading your pet’s diet can lead to some amazing health improvements, including:
- Stronger immune system
- Better digestion and smaller, less smelly stools
- Shinier coat and healthier skin
- More joint support
- A longer, happier life
But... switching too fast can cause tummy upset — which is why a smooth transition is key. Here's how to make the change confidently and safely.
For Dogs: Set the Foundation for Success
1. Set Meal Times
No more free feeding! Offer meals at scheduled times to support digestion and appetite — and make it easier to mix foods consistently.
2. Mix Gradually
Transition over a full week:
-
Days 1–2: 75% old food, 25% new
-
Days 3–4: 50/50
-
Days 5–6: 25% old, 75% new
-
Day 7+: 100% new food
Pro tip: Freeze-dried pumpkin helps with both diarrhea and constipation during diet changes.
3. Watch & Adjust
Soft stools are normal, but if your dog vomits or has diarrhea, slow things down. Every dog is different — and that’s okay!
What About Cold Turkey?
Some dogs — especially puppies — can switch immediately to raw or fresh food without issues. If you go this route, stick to one single protein and consistent mealtimes. Monitor stool quality closely and back up if needed.
For Cats: Patience Pays Off
Cats are famously finicky, but with a little patience and strategy, even picky eaters can switch to a healthier diet.
1. Set Meal Times
Get rid of the free-feeding habit. Set mealtimes create better appetite and curiosity around new food.
2. From Dry to Wet
Start by mixing wet food into their dry or topping wet food with a few kibbles until they start accepting it.
3. Wet to Fresh
Once they’re used to wet food, gradually add in fresh food (like gently cooked or raw) using small amounts and toppers to entice them.
Don’t rush it — better food leads to better health. Go at your cat’s pace and don’t give up!
