Birds are amazing companions, and when properly looked after, can live long & healthy lives. Whether you're feeding parakeets and budgies, or wild birds outside, we have the knowledge and experience to help guide you to the perfect food. All bird's nutritional requirements are different, and what works best for some will not provide adequate nutrition for others. Therefore, we proudly provide the Dallas area with the best food for your feathered friends, improving their health and wellness and extending their lives.
Wild bird vs pet bird food:
Wild bird food, depending on where you live, is usually a combination of different types of seeds, including thistle, sunflower, safflower, millet, and sorghum. Additionally, numerous wild bird feeds include peanuts and corn, which are preferred by certain species like cardinals and blue jays. Wild bird food varies in order to attract as many different species as possible. So while it satisfies their calorie requirements, it's not dialed-in nutritionally like domestic bird food.
Domestic bird food is normally a blend of similar seeds, with nutritionally dense pellets added in. Conures, doves, and pigeons enjoy millet, as do budgies and parakeets. They also enjoy safflower and sunflower seeds when they're hulled, though parrots and hookbills will prefer larger seed types.
Food for pets will have prebiotic fiber and probiotic ingredients included, along with a selection of various other all-natural seeds and fruits. These strengthen the immune and digestive function of your birds, and more closely imitate their natural diet, which would not usually include a few types of seeds.
Ensuring appropriate nutrition:
Birds need prebiotics and probiotics to keep their digestive functions working efficiently. Omega-3 fatty acids from nuts and seeds provide fat for their brains and nerves, and improves the gloss and shine of their feathers, while the different vitamins and micronutrients keep them healthy overall. Additionally, as your bird ages, you will want to get in touch with an expert on what type of food you should be feeding them. Younger birds have different dietary needs than older birds, and changing their food requires care and needs to be done gradually, as birds can have picky digestive systems. Gradually include the new food into your bird's dish, replacing more of the old seed with the new food daily to ensure appropriate adherence to the new diet.
At Odyssey Pets, we focus on ensuring your bird is provided with the most effective nutrition for their specific needs. This store has everything you need for your pet and Sherry is amazing!
Today I went in Odyssey Pets for the first time. Wow! Miles has a wealth of information regarding fresh and saltwater aquariums and fish. The customer service was like walking back in time. That is the highest compliment I can pay a store this day and time. Although it is over an hour drive, I will definitely be going back. Thank you.
Very helpful staff
I took my two pugs here for years to get their nails cut, and they were always so good with them and did a fantastic job. It says a lot about the people when your dogs are excited to be in a store for a nail grind. They have a great selection of food and treats too, including local brands which I enjoyed trying out. Now we live in Chicago, and I sure do miss this store!
Love the variety this small pet shop has, and the owners genuinely seem to care about the animals. Lots of unique treats, toys, and very robust saltwater and freshwater sections.
